The Built environment is all around us. Have you ever stopped to think about the roads, rail and bridges we use to go to school? Hospitals to accommodate us when we are sick? What about countries that aren't as lucky as we are?...That suffer natural disasters and wars. The Construction Industry can help them rebuild their lives AND THEIR HOMES!

Building Awareness will help raise money for charities including RedR, the Register of Engineers for Disaster Relief, Water Aid providing clean water to poor countries and CRASH, which helps to provide shelter for the homeless in the UK. Have a look at their web-sites for more information.

Without the Construction Industry we would not have these facilities, amenities and services and yet it is so often taken for granted.

What does Costain do?

Costain is a Management Contractor. In a nutshell that means we manage the whole project cycle, including the actual work on site, in order to take a project from the drawing board to reality.

There are lots of diverse opportunities but the majority of our work is carried out on site from site offices, with a certain amount of hands on work. This is the hard hat and muddy feet bit, or is it?...It involves a lot of management, both personal time and work management in programming and planning. Not to mention the management of sub-contractors, labour, plant and communicating with local residents to involve them in what is happening. At the end of the day it is about running a successful business.

The work can be very physical and you may have to brave the elements at times-not such a problem in the summer months! But the rewards and satisfaction of seeing a job take shape far outweigh any disadvantages. Not to mention perks like a company car to get to and about sites!
