Hundreds of children at The Meads Primary School in East Grinstead learnt the importance of not playing on construction sites during a talk by Southern Water’s contractor 4Delivery*.
Southern Water is carrying out a £1.5 million environmental improvement scheme close to the school to help protect properties in Lister Avenue from flooding at times of heavy rainfall.
Head teacher Rhona Perry said: “We were delighted that 4Delivery were able to come in to talk to the children about safety during our 'Healthy School Week'. The children really enjoyed participating in the active assemblies.”
Doug Henney, 4Delivery’s Head of Health and Safety said: “Southern Water and it’s contractors are genuinely passionate about health and safety, especially where we are working in the community, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to visit the school and make the children aware of the dangers of construction sites.”
The scheme involves installing an underground pumping station and storage tank which can hold up to 135,000 litres of wastewater during storm conditions, and upgrading the existing sewer in Lister Avenue.
Work started in January 2007 and is expected to be complete by Spring 2007.
* 4Delivery is a joint venture between United Utilities, Costain and MWH, and is responsible for project managing, designing and delivering £750 million programme of improvement works on behalf of Southern Water across Hampshire, Kent, Sussex and the Isle of Wight between 2005-2010.
