The event was attended by approx 80 students all aged between 16-17, split into two groups of 40, of which one group was set the task to complete in the morning and was then repeated to the second forty in the afternoon.
The event itself was called 'Town and Country Planning'. It involved the 40 students splitting into groups of six, where two were the Architects, two were the Quantity Surveyors and two were the Marketing Team. One was also given the responsibility of being the project manager on top of their other role. They were given a 10 minute presentation about the task and given an information pack with instructions. They had to plan and design a small housing development, cost the project and then market the event to the general public. They had 1 hour 30 minutes to complete the design and costing and produce a 3D model for their development, then they had to give a 5 minute presentation on their development, to myself and other helpers / teachers involved. Whilst they were completing the project I went around the groups offering assistance and answering any questions they had about the task and the construction industry in general.
It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to understand roles in the construction industry, and almost all were amazed at how many careers their actually are. It was also a great opportunity for Emma Gray to talk to some females amongst the groups that were keen on learning how Emma was accepted in the construction industry as it was a career path they were considering themselves. This was a great event and something Emma is keen on continuing to be a part of as a learning experience for her as well asthe students.
